Municipal Information
Town Description
Settled in 1762 and centrally located on the peninsula, Blue Hill is a destination for visitors and permanent residents for its open coastlines, outdoor recreation opportunities and historical heritage. The area is a center for musical organizations, with Kneisel Hall, Blue Hill Bach, Blue Hill Concert Association, Bagaduce Chorale and popular steel drum band Flash! in the Pans offering live concerts and chamber music throughout the year. The Blue Hill Public Library houses a collection incorporating books, maps, periodicals and newspapers, along with newer media technologies, sponsors lectures, and hosts discussion groups and meetings.
Walking trails abound, up Blue Hill Mountain and more moderate trails, through Blue Hill Heritage Trust. There are two public landings, on Water St. and in South Blue Hill. While restaurants and shops create a friendly, walkable, in-town area, more stores and restaurants are located uptown, on South St. and Mines Rd.
High schools are semi-private George Stevens Academy and private Blue Hill Harbor School. Primary schools are Blue Hill Consolidated School and private Bay School. Serving the medical needs of the surrounding community, Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital is a critical access hospital offering primary and selected specialty health care services.
